Take-Two Still Profiting Off Of GTA V
It’s been out for a while, but according to the latest fiscal quarter report from Take-Two Interactive, Grand Theft Auto V still commands a sizable chunk of their monthly profits. This is mainly due to fees for GTA Online, DLC and microtransactions, which have been keeping the series alive despite no new chapter in sight.
For the quarter that ended September 30, Take-Two reported net revenue of $364.9 million, an increase of 169 percent compared to the same period last year. Take-Two claims the “blockbuster launch” of NBA 2K16 contributed to these profits, which is corporate puffery if I ever heard it, as that game launched on September 29 — meaning it only counts for two days.
Yet at the same time, GTA V couldn’t be the only thing keeping the company afloat, as figures for downloadable extra content made up 20 percent of their total revenue. Take-Two refers to GTA V’s in-game purchases as “Recurrent consumer spending,” and mentions that sales in DLC and related products grew 39 percent and made up 51 percent of net revenue from digitally delivered content.
As far as volume of players, GTA V still wins for Take-Two with a registered eight million players taking part in online activities during last quarter. All in all they generated a profit of $32.7 million, which is a considerable improvement over the same quarter one year ago, where they posted a loss of $35.4 million.
