People Are Modding GTA V Already

Grand Theft Auto V is on PC now and nothing can put that genie back in the bottle. And with a game’s PC release comes the inevitable hacks and mods that arise from the PC platform’s malleable nature. This time, however, Rockstar did everything it could to delay that inevitability as long as possible. Modder Boris Voronstov, creator of a graphical enhancement tool for PC game graphics, ran against a wall when he first attempted to crack open GTA V:

“I was wrong. Rockstar did everything to prevent modding of GTA5, so at this moment impossible to do anything via editing game files. All my buddies modders share the same opinion, that GTA is short living like any other game without mods, so I do not care about modding it…”

But other modders were more optimistic and began to see some success. A modder who goes by the handle DrDaxxy managed to create GTA V’s first mod, a field of view modifier (a FOV adjuster does exist in the actual game, but fans feel it is much too limited). Then another mod popped up, this one just a simple mass of cheat codes that granted invulnerability and unlimited bullets (don’t even think about taking it online).

But most impressive is the fact that, after mere days, someone’s gotten the game’s world to run in first-person mode on the Oculus Rift. It was done with the aid of VorpX, software that adapts game builds for VR compatibility. Using the Rift and a copy of GTA V, you can actually step into the game and wander around Los Santos in full 3D, though the game may become harder to play.
